LATEST NEWS
Race Fees...Race fees for Juniors at all VSJ organised events have been dropped to a £1
Sunday 4th March...To be fair to those who stayed in bed it was a foul morning with a strong south easterly wind making parts of the course very tough going and downright dangeous in places plus a wet road as it stopped raing just before the start. Full marks to Sam and Phil for turning out, they may not have recorded the fastest of times, but taking part is half the battle and at least you have got that all important first event under your belt. Its now down to the rest of you to show what you can do!
Sat 17th Feb...Where were you all, OK so it was half term, but I know some of you were slacking!!! Full marks to Alex Winchester and Stephen Haley for turning up and putting in a really good effort practicing for the duo on the 4th March.
Sat 3rd Feb 07... At long last the clouds rolled away and we had a glorious sunny winters day. Four of the squad decided to drag themselves out of bed for a very enjoyable ride with a short time trial on the five mile road in the middle. With a north easterly breeze it was better to head south so we started from the scout hut with the finish at the quarry, where the normal 5 mile start is. All four youngsters put in a good effort, results as follows:
1st Phil Vautier 7.09, 2nd Dvid Haine 7.30, 3rd Karl Laugeard 8.51, 4th Sam Carney 8.54.
Thanks to Neil Laugeard for his help.
Fri 24th Nov...The prize giving dinner was attended by four of the youth squad all of whom, together with Stephen Haley received prizes, generously donated by PEDAL POWER for their efforts over the 2006 season. The five winners were Myles Bardin, Sam Carney, Cormac Bloomer, Karl Laugeard and Stephen Haley. Special congratulations to Cormac who also won the riders rider of the year award for his determination and great commitment to the sport.
Sat 18th Nov...With the weather behaving itself it was time once again for the squad to try their luck or more to the point their legs against the clock in a short sprint from La Pulente to La Braye. The four riders taking part gave it their best shot and all showed a considerable improvement on their earlier times. Results below but the highlight was an excellent time from Karl Laugeard beating Karl for the first time in a competitive event

Monday 13th Nov...After a false start due to the weather the first (second) Saturday session went ahead on 4th Nov with seven of the group taking part. Results of the first short time trial are set out below with Alex Winchester throwing down the gauntlet to his team mates and showing what a pair of long legs can do for you....great performance but its early days yet. As its still only Nov the distance is very short (approx half a mile) and is designed to give the youngsters a feel of how a time trial works and the pain and effort required. Good to see a new member of the squad...Martin from Poland.

Oct 06.....Apologies, I have not updated this page for a long time, but better late than never so here goes. The 2006 season is now over and for the next few months it is all about keeping the legs spinning, doing the miles but at a gentle pace. Every other week from Sat 7th Oct there will be a specific Youth group ride which at first will simply involve riding as a group, sometimes with the older riders, but also heading off in other directions. Pace will be gentle and a good opportunity to bring along any mates who want to come and have a go, I can’t promise club bikes but if they are interested and want to join the club we will do our best. Over the last few weeks it has been great to see a good squad starting to develop with David & Phil at the older end of the scale and Sam, Karl, Stephen, Alex Winchester and Alex Haine further down the age range. As the Autumn moves into winter we will be putting together specific training plans involving a mix of hills, intervals, sprints, and other recognised training techniques to prepare you for the 2007 racing season. If you have questions, or need help on cycling matters give us a ring. I am gathering all the groups e-mail addresses which will hopefully make it easier to communicate.

2006 season, preseason training sessions
Sat 1st April...What a change, warm weather, sun glasses and a pleasant S.W. breeze made for a very different feel to this session compared with the 2 earlier efforts. With the older riders absent it was up to the younger members to show what they could do, joined by Matthew Parker for his first outing on a road bike. Splitting into two groups, big wheel and little wheels, the first part of the hour-long session was all about warming up, practicing through and off and cornering on the tight bends of the track. After this the groups moved onto sprints with Sam Carney and Cormac Bloomer having a real tussle over both runs with Sam just getting ahead on each with Matthew bringing up the rear but working hard and learning just how much effort is required to really get a bike moving. Stephen Haley continued his dominant form of last year within the big wheel group showing a clean pair of heels to Karl Laugeard followed by Myles Bardin, getting used to the larger frame bike. The final activity was three lap pursuit race with the three smaller bikes joined by Myles setting off first chased by Stephen and Karl. Myles quickly started to pull away from the other three with Cormac and Sam then pulling away from Matthew who put in a great effort on his first session. Stephen gradually wore down Karl and pulled away as he chased hard to catch the younger riders but they in turn were working hard to keep away. Myles was out in front and manage to maintain his lead all the way for an impressive win. Sam and Cormac worked well together but on the final lap Cormac’s greater experience told and he broke away, finishing second. With Stephen steaming up on his shoulder Sam tried bravely to hold onto third place but was just caught on the line with Karl coming in fifth and Matthew sixth. It was great to see the youngsters working so hard and it should be an interesting season with Sam and Cormac battling it out on the smaller wheels and Karl working out how he can hang on to Stephen. With other young riders added to the mix the first race on Tuesday 2nd May (not 5th as I mistakenly said) should be well worth watching. Thanks to all the helpers and parents for delivering etc, there are still some club bikes available so if you know of any other budding Tour De Quennevais riders bring em along.

Sat 18th March...Two weeks on and the its groundhog day....again...a cold fierce North Easterly breeze still blowing making conditions difficult for riding, but at least it was dry. With six YDP members braving the low temperatures it was keep pedalling and avoid standing around to try and keep warm, a few quick formation laps in rows of three to get into the swing of things and then onto the sprints. First up was Phil Vautier battling aginst David Haine, starting from the finish line at a slow speed then picking up the pace as quickly as possible down to the first red flag before the bends. Phil had the legs on David this time much to the latters disgust but, its early days and there should be some good rivalry between these two as the season progresses. The second time round Peter Ilton joined the group to spice things up and managed to finish half a wheel ahead of David with Phil only inches back in third place. Next up was Karl Laugeard and Stephen Haley (good to see you out of hibernation)... this was close affair with Stephen getting ahead, but not by much on both occasions. Last, but by no means least was Cormac Bloomer and Myles Bardin...Cormac proving that all that practice with his dad (watch out Colm he’ll be beating you soon) was worthwile as he came out a convincing winner. The final activity was a three lap pursuit race with Peter Ilton joining in with David and Phil to see if they could catch the others. Cormac and Myles set off with half a lap start over Stephen & Karl who had a further half a lap head start on their pursuers. Cormac showed great strength to stay ahead all the way with only Peter just catching him on the line, Phil coming in third, David fourth, Stephen fifth, Karl 6th and Myles, finding the conditions tough going bringing up the rear.
The first training session of the season took place at the track this Saturday (4th March) with 8 YDP members, including two new faces, Sam Carney and Alex Winchester, braving a cold but dry day for a quick hour of intensive track exercises. After some through and off work over four laps the two groups of four practiced their sprints with Phil Vautier proving the faster of the older group and Karl Laugeard showing a clean pair of heels to his fellow riders on the smaller framed bikes. To finish the session there was a 3 lap race for those on the big frames and 2 laps for the smaller bikes. Phil Vautier and David Haine managed to shake Alex Winchester off by the end of the second lap with Phil winning the final dash for the line, Alex Haine coming in fourth, stick at it both Alexes its early days yet and you have age on your side! In the two lap race Karl proved too strong and won convincingly with a tense contest for second and third place between Cormac Bloomer and Sam Carney which Cormac won, Myles Bardin coming in just behind the other two for fourth place. It was great to see all participants putting in so much effort and with racing proper not due to start until May there is plenty of time to work on the fitness levels, stick at it guys. Thanks to all the riders who helped coach and organise.
