06.17 Inter Insular Road Race
Interinsular Road Race 17th June
Personally I like the watersplash circuit; OK its got a hill in it, but Jubilee is not that steep and it does represent a challenge, allowing the climbers to get away from the sprinters...or in my case chucked out of the back early on, but I was in good company. Weather conditions for this years race were excellent and with a large Guernsey contingent of 18 riders, including 8 juniors (good to see you Gary, keep in touch, you’re always welcome), it was one of the largest turnouts we have seen for a long time.
With Chris, Richard, Sam & Jim all away in Serbia it was down to James Amy, Vince, and Danny to uphold Jerseys honour in the Seniors over 7 laps of the circuit. Not sure exactly what happened but I’m sure they put up an excellent fight however, as you can see from the results, the visitors took the honours. Good to see many of the Velo seniors giving it a go in this group It was a very different story in the Vets, Ladies & Juniors with a group of 40 riders setting off and staying together minus a few stragglers for the first lap. The second climb saw the peleton start to fragment with the leading group including the likes of Alan Irving, Paul Lipscombe, Bill Buist, Bob Cabot, Kenny Patrick, Jim Davis, Mike Mitch, Doc King and Alex Blampied getting away. Yours truly was left in a select group including three visitors, plus Dave Whitt & Tony Pushman. We gradually swept up the stagglers from the leaders group and finished with 12 in the group. Up front a small group made up of Bill Buist, Rob Coutanche, Kevin Pilley & 3 visitors got away in the closing stages and in a tense sprint Rob took the honours for Jersey, great ride. In the ladies Jim showed a clean pair of heeels to the Guernsey lady, great effort.
