Ladies

Calling all Ladies!

Jersey has a fine heritage of strong lady cyclists and it is VSJ’s aim to encourage more ladies into cycling by fostering a friendly, helpful, supportive and (not least) fun environment to further develop this heritage.

The plan is for this page to evolve over time and we hope it will provide useful and interesting information - articles are on the left.  Suggestions and contributions are welcome...

Saturday Club Run - 9am at the Steam Clock

During the early winter months Saturday rides are relaxed.  They are at a suitable pace for anyone who has reasonable level of fitness and are an ideal starting point for those who wish for an introduction to club cycling. There will always be a lady present (Mary, Nikki or "Jim") so why not come along? Bit nervous? Then do give Ladies Captain Jim a call on 855241 or text her on 07797 749585 and she’ll happily tell you anything (and more) you need to know!

This winter we are running some Ladies sessions to assist with bike handling skills and approaches to the different disciplines.  Read about the track session and why not come along?

Interested in Racing?

We have a fantastic race scene in Jersey with up to 3 races a week, resulting in an incredible 74 races in a Season!  These consist of Time Trials, Track Races at Quennevais, and a variety of Road Races on courses of varying difficulty.  While it can seem daunting at first Time Trialling is a great way to get a taste for the race scene and, as your confidence grows, Division 3 in the Track Series provides plenty of opportunity to hone the skills needed for racing on the road.

Once your enthusiasm and abilities have grown you may begin to wonder how you compare to other women cyclists beyond the ones your race with in Jersey.  There are a number of opportunities to do this. Firstly the Inter-Insular Races with Guernsey (a Time Trial and a Road Race each year), secondly it is relatively easy to pop over to France to race in the French races (click on Les Epreuves).  If you feel more at home heading to the UK there is a ladies calendar with the Bruton Road Race Series and also the Rudy Project Time Trial Series plus the Team Series.  National ladies events make for good goals.

The Island Games, held every 2 years is a fantastic place to meet and race with strong, inspirational lady cyclists!  The next one is in Isle of Wight in 2011, although there is talk of a Cycling Festival in Menorca in 2009.  Why not make it a target to Qualify?!!   In short, how far you wish to take your racing is up to you...!

Want to discuss racing away, need some company or ideas?!  Then do give Ladies Captain Jim a call on 855241 or text her on 07797 749585.
