07.22 Round the Bays race
It not the Tour De France & the climbs out of the bays are certainly not rivals to the Alps or Pyrennes by any imagination, but ask any of the 38 riders taking part in the ’Round the Bays’ race organised by Velosport Jersey this Sunday and they will tell you it’s the toughest ride in the calendar. With a group ride to St Aubins from West Park the race kicked off at the bottom of the first climb out of the bay, which starts by the Royal Channel Yacht Club, with the faster riders rapidly taking control on the front. It was then down into St Brelades and up the climb by the church, round the Corbiere loop and a long run along the 5 mile road to L’Etacq and straight up the hill. Round past Les Landes and a dive down into Greve De Leq; the Morier valley beckoned next followed by the hardest climb of all out of Bon Nuit. Barely time to get breath back and Bouley Bay is on you with the long run down into Rozel next, out of the bay and it’s the turn of Fliquet. A quick descent to the bottom of St Catherines Hill, but first its round the rock before heading back up this, the final climb of the day. Right at the top to St Martins and then a quick run to the finish at Maufant.
At the finish there was nothing to separate Vince Peron, Richard Tanguy & Chris Spence, with Richard just winning it by a half a wheel. Kevin Pilley put in a great ride to win the vets whilst Jim Davies brought back the excellent form she took to Rhodes finishing strongly as first lady. Throughout the race groups formed, broke up and reformed as the climbs took their toll. Various Velo riders apart from Richard showed they are good climbers with Jim Garrett, Scott Pitcher, Doc Snook and Anthony Chandlen putting in excellent performances. Alex Blampied was going well until stopped in his tracks by a pucture and I was part of a group working well with Spencer, Andy Boxall & Pascal Ybert until I fell out of the back on Bon Nuit...a painful experience.
A big thank you to organisrs Andy Ilton & Bill Buist and to all those marshalls who turned out to do their bit; in some cases in more than one location. Don’t forget...no marshalls , no event.
